THE LAST GREAT HURRAH UPDATE

The Royal Australian Regiment Association, SA, presents, The Last Great Hurrah, in recognition of the service and sacrifice made by those who fought in, over or around Korea, 1950, to 1956.
With the support of DVA, ST Peters Cathedral, the Cathedral Hotel, Mr Peter Standford, Australian Army Band Adelaide, The South Australian Korean Community, the Korean and South East Asian Forces Association, SA, Catherine Lambert, Nicki Horsnell, Alexander Frost, 47 Australia Army Cadet  Unit, Adelaide City Council, the Australian War Memorial, the National Service Historical Society, and His Excellency, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC, CSC, RANR  The Governor of South Australia, Adelaide has provided a quality commemoration of the 55th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the United Nations, and the 57th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong.

The following is provided for information:
 
22  April 2008   A Meet-and-Greet will be conducted in the Queen Adelaide Room at the Adelaide Town Hall, 128 King William Street, Adelaide, commencing at 1900hr or 7.00pm until 2000hr or 8.00pm.  This is an opportunity for all those attending functions to receive the latest information and to ask question.   Then it is intended that those in attendance have a few drinks and get to know each other before the more official functions begin.   The Town Hall has indicated that the Dress Code for the Queen Adelaide Room is Lounge Suit for men and Day Dress for women.
 
23 April 2008    His Excellency, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC, CSC, RANR  The Governor of South Australia, will host an invitation only Reception at Government House to mark  the 55th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the United Nations, and the 57th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong.  This is an invitation only function and if you have not received an invitation, please don’t be discouraged.  Only a limited number of invitations could be issued and most of these were taken up by South Australian Korean War Veterans, and overseas visitors.
 
24 April 2008    The annual Kapyong Day Commemoration will be held at ST Peters Cathedral instead of the South Australian War Memorial on North Terrace.  The Dean of ST Peters Cathedral, The Very Reverend Dr Steven Ogden will host an Ecumenical Service to commemorate the Battle of Kapyong on 23/24 April 1951, in which 3 Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, won the prestigious US Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation.
 
This commemoration is open to all Korean veterans, veterans of other conflicts, to the families of all veterans regardless of service, and to interested members of the public.  Official Guest on the day will include The Governor of South Australia, Colonel Yong Soo Choi, Defence Attaché of the Republic of Korea, local military heads of service, Ex-service organisation representatives and members of the Adelaide Korean Community and two serving members of the 3rd Battalion, the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry.  With Music accompaniment by Australian Army Band Adelaide and vocals by Catherine Lambert, Nicki Horsnell and Alexander Frost, this will be an extraordinary remembrance event.

After the service, lunch will be held across the road at the Cathedral Hotel and everyone who attends the service is invited to attend the luncheon.
 
ANZAC Day, 25 April 2008    Arrangements have been made for Korean veterans who would like to participate in the ANZAC Day March to march with the Korean and South East Asian Forces Association contingent.  A map of the form-up position is available and members are invited to arrive at Group 10 from about 9.00am onwards with step off expected some time after 10.00am.  Afterwards, the Korean and South East Asian Forces Association will hold its reunion back at the Henley and Grange RSL Clubrooms at 138 North Henley Beach Road, HENLEY BEACH ,and all are invited to join the South Australians for some convivial refreshments for the remainder of the day.
 
After the March, it is intended to have a table on Torrens Parade Ground to sell copies of the book the Royal Australian Regiment Association of SA commissioned with Mr Steve Lewis, in memory of those Australians who served in the Korean conflict.   The book is 176 pages, and features the works of some of Australia’s finest wartime photographers which have been magnificently reproduced in vivid black and white.  Complimenting the Australian War Memorial captions to the photographs are poignant quotes from veteran airmen, sailors and soldiers as well as civilian observers.
 
It is highly recommended reading for any Korean war veteran and their families as well as educators and students of Australian military campaigns.  To obtain your copy before attending your reunion of choice, follow the directions to Torrens Parade Ground and buy your own part of Australian military history or download the attached application form.
 
27 April 2008    A Farewell Dinner is to be held at the Semaphore Palais, The Esplanade, SEMAPHORE, as a farewell to visitors and to provide closure to the events of the week.  Korean community dancers will provide light entertainment throughout the dinner and music for dancing will fill the gaps.   Tickets are just $20 a head and you purchase your own drinks.  Tickets are available by contacting Ken Moseley on 8443 8817 or 0408 080 772.
